HISTORY
Booubyjan, meaning "Big Rock", was taken up by two Irish brothers, Clement and Paul Lawless in 1847 - then an area of 281 square miles - and the Homestead was begun the following year. The property has remained in the same family to the present day and now runs beef cattle. The Lawless family is thought to be the third oldest family business in Queensland.
The Homestead is under constant and subtle restoration. Although in poor condition through some periods, it has survived the ravages of time, white ants (termites) and the occasional threat of fire. Structures have been replaced or strengthened only where necessary; the old buildings have not been falsely squared or levelled. Keeping in mind the past as well as the future, every endeavour has been made to remain faithful to the old styles and techniques of building. All timber used in the restoration has been cut from Booubyjan land and, where possible, was prepared using traditional methods.
Much remains to be done inside and out and will be a work in progress for some time. The commitment is to preserve this history since it is significant, not only to the family, but to everyone.
